Geographical location

Introduction:

Kaunia is an upazila of eight upazilas of Rangpur district. This small town has been playing an important role in the socio-economic development of the country for a long time. Issues like history-tradition, literature-culture, production-development etc. are closely related to modern development. Its past is as rich in tradition as it is in the present. In order to know the past and present of a place, it is necessary to know the geographical and natural details of that place first.

 

 

Location, size and population

Kaunia upazila is located 22 km east of Rangpur district headquarters. It is situated between 25.420 and 25,500 north latitudes and between 69.160 and 69.150 east longitudes.

          There are 6 unions and 1 municipality in this upazila. According to the 2011 census report, the total population of 60 mouzas of the upazila is 2,43,405. Among them - 1,12,601 males and 1,15,104 females. Its inhabitants are 2,12,081 Muslims, 15,605 Hindus, 42 Christians and 6 others.

Border:

Kakina, Kal Mati, Saptibari, Lalmonirhat, Teesta and Barbari areas are located on the north bank of Teesta. Haragach is an area on the south bank of the river Teesta, bordered by Pirgachha Upazila to the south, Lalmonirhat and Rajarhat areas to the east and Rangpur Sadar Upazila and Gangachara Upazila to the west. Kaunia Upazila, formerly known as Kaunia Thana, is in the middle of the boundary of the said area.

 

Geography, rivers and ponds

Kaunia upazila consists of two types of geo-natural areas. Old Teesta alluvial land and new Teesta alluvial land. The two Anjals cover 72 per cent and 28 per cent of the area respectively. The main and only river in the area is the Teesta. Its tributary is the river Manas. The river has kept the area juicy and lively by spreading its branches in all the unions and mouzas of the upazila. The number of small and big ponds here is known to be more than one thousand.
