The North Bengal State Railway Company introduced the first railway service in British India in 1853. Then, in 1879 the work of extending the railway from Kolkata to Pabartipur to the north began to provide relief during the famine. In the same year a meter gauge railway from Parbatipur was extended to Kaunia via Rangpur city. Later it was associated with Lalmonirhat. As it was not possible to build a bridge over the river Teesta at that time, a steam-powered ferry was arranged to cross the river. Then in 1899-1900 the railway bridge over the river Teesta was built. When the bridge was damaged during the 1971 War of Independence, it was repaired in 1982 by collecting spans, girders and other equipment from another bridge. For a long time, the bridge was used only for rail communication. The construction of an alternative bridge for road communication would be very costly and after examining the feasibility and suitability of launching road communication on it, on March 4, 1986, road communication along with railway was officially started. Since then, both rail and road communication has continued over the Teesta Railway Bridge. The bridge continues to play an important role as a link between Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts and other districts including Rangpur.
